“Dennis said he would find us.”

Their tour guide walked up the line, and Martin stepped out of line to intercept her.

“I need to talk with you a moment,” he said, blocking her way. “I’m very busy now, we can chat when we reach our lodgings.” She spoke as she looked at her list and moved to push on past, and Martin stepped into her.

“I don’t want to make a scene,” he said harshly, “but if I have to get your attention, we’ll all be in trouble. We, my friends and I must leave your group. We have to return to the states tomorrow, and you will say nothing.”

“But-” She looked past Martin at the row of army tanks on the outside of the drive, the soldiers lounging against the tracks, and then back at Martin.

“These are unusual times in this country, and I’m sure you can see that. We don’t want any trouble. Don’t say anything, or-” Martin pointed at the tanks and shook his head. “We will accompany the group to the hotel, and then,” he shrugged. She turned and walked up to the front of her group, her hands shaking as she walked. As she walked away, a man approached Martin from the street. He looked to be about forty, was wearing a brown leather jacket, tan slacks, and had shoulder length black hair. He stood next to Martin, looked out over the sea of cars and busses, and asked, “Are you Martin Andrews?” “Yes.”

“I’m a friend, an amigo of Dennis Underwood. Go to your hotel, get your rooms, and I’ll contact you there.”

Martin nodded.

“Too many soldiers here, less in downtown Lima. I’ll contact you after you get settled.” He started to move away and Martin placed a hand on his arm.

“Any word on the students?”

“Yes,” the man said, and then walked into the crowd.
